Given the success of smartphones in recent years, it is not surprising that new instant messaging applications are launched almost every month.

This is done with the aim of enabling people to communicate from their smartphones without having to resort to traditional SMS text messaging and calls. So far, the most popular VoIP app for mobile devices is still Skype. However, there are other similar applications that people are talking about such as Viber and Tango. Skype, Tango and Viber instant messaging apps have a few features that put them together. There are also several features that put them kilometers apart.

Skype

Without a doubt, Skype is the king of video conferencing app in the world. It is one of the most well-known video chat apps. The application lets users connect with their friends and family via text messages, video chats, as well as voice calls. Skype is available on almost all the popular mobile platforms, including Blackberry, Android, iOS, Symbian and Windows Phone. Skype can also be used on desktop PCs.

When it comes to video calling, Skype offers high-quality video calls. Furthermore, making voice calls with Skype is easier. It also offers video calling over multiple platforms. Skype has a bigger user base than Viber and Tango.

Viber

Viber is a VoIP and instant messaging application for mobile devices. Apart from text messaging, the app lets users exchange images, audio media, and video messages. The application is available for a wide range of mobile platforms, including BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, Symbian, Nokia Series 40, and Windows Phone. It is also available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. The client software works on both Wi-Fi and 3G/4G networks. To use it on your computer, you need first to install it on your phone.

Though Viber offers free video calling, it still needs a lot of improvement. This means there are several issues that need to be ironed out. Even with a strong Internet connection, audio and video quality is not the best. On the brighter side, Viber app does not charge you any fees for using the service. However, you will need to purchase Viber credits in case you want to call landline or mobile phone users.

Tango

Tango is a free messenger app that allows you to make free video and voice calls and send free messages to your friends around the world.  Tango works with most iOS and Android devices. With Tango, you do not need a front-facing camera to make video calls. However, you can only video chat with one person at the same time, which is something you won’t get on Skype or Viber.

The registration process of Tango is very easy. You only need a phone number, and that is it. The only problem is that the app does not have a big user base, and there is no possibility of calling non-Tango users.

Skype is without a doubt the best VoIP App today. Viber and Tango has a lot of catching up to do. It will need to bring new unique features to compete against Skype and Viber. As of the moment, Skype is still the king of VoIP and video conferencing applications.
